People with obstructive snoring have disrupted sleep and low blood oxygen levels. When obstructive snoring occurs, the tongue is sucked against the back of the throat. This blocks the upper airway and airflow stops. When the oxygen level in the brain becomes low enough, the sleeper partially awakens, the obstruction in the throat clears, and the flow of air starts again, usually with a loud gasp.
Repeated cycles of decreased oxygenation lead to very serious cardiovascular problems. Additionally, these individuals suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness, depression, and loss of concentration.
Some patients have obstructions that are less severe called Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS). In either case, the individuals suffer many of the same symptoms.
The first step in treatment resides in recognition of the symptoms and seeking appropriate consultation. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons offer consultation and treatment options.
In addition to a detailed history, the doctors will assess the anatomic relationships in the maxillofacial region. With cephalometic (skull x-ray) analysis, the doctors can ascertain the level of obstruction. Sometimes a naso-pharyngeal exam is done with a flexible fiber-optic camera. To confirm the amount of cardiovascular compromise and decreased oxygenation levels, a sleep study may be recommended to monitor an individual overnight.
There are several treatment options available. An initial treatment may consist of using a nasal CPAP machine that delivers pressurized oxygen through a nasal mask to limit obstruction at night. One of the surgical options is an uvulo-palato-pharyngo-plasty (UPPP), which is performed in the back of the soft palate and throat. A similar procedure is sometimes done with the assistance of a laser and is called a laser assisted uvulo-palato-plasty (LAUPP). In other cases, a radio-frequency probe is utilized to tighten the soft palate. These procedures are usually performed under light IV sedation in the office.
In more complex cases, the bones of the upper and lower jaw may be repositioned to increase the size of the airway (orthognathic surgery). This procedure is done in the hospital under general anesthesia and requires a one to two day overnight stay in the hospital.
OSA is a very serious condition that needs careful attention and treatment. Most major medical plans offer coverage for diagnosis and treatment.

Going to the dentist is definitely not something I look forward to, but Dr. Pezeshkian is so amazing and comforting, I never have a problem! The staff is amazing, in both locations..Arcadia and Glendale. I had my wisdom teeth pulled out this morning and everyone knows the fear behind that. Dr. Pezeshkian took two of my top wisdom teeth out and it took 15 seconds each with no pain or discomfort. Just like any other kid, I've always hated the dentist. I've probably switched dentists like 4 times...never felt comfortable to get up and get my teeth drilled. Who would ever look forward to that? After I started coming by Dr. Pezeshkian, I've never been a nervous wreck before going into his office.. It's always a fun experience for me. The staff makes you feel very comfortable and the receptionist is also super nice. Appointments are ALWAYS on time and the office is always clean and organized. I'm very happy to have switched to Dr. Pezeshkian. I haven't had a problem with going to the dentist ever since!! Thank you Dr., you're the best at what you do !!!
Dr. Pezeshkian and his staff are truly incredible. I've been coming to him since I was a kid and he never disappoints. I've been seeing Dr. Pezeshkian since I moved to LA over 4 yrs ago. I originally went specifically to transfer my Invisalign case because I saw they were having a Groupon special. And although the special was explicitly for new cases, they were so kind and flexible enough to work out a deal for my unique situation and I've never looked back. Since then he and his staff have gracefully ushered me through two gum surgeries, whitening treatments, night guards, retainers, countless cleanings, fillings and, most recently, Botox to treat my TMJ symptoms. Needless to say, I've spent a LOT of time there and my smile can fully attest to their knowledge, talent, professionalism, and bedside manner. The office has a very private family practice kind of vibe, where you get friendly, personal attention and know that they really care. Dr. Pezeshkian takes the time to explain his proposed treatment without pushing the up-sell (though his on-point bow tie game doesn't hurt). All-in-all, I'd like to say my smile speaks for itself (but since it's the internet you'll just have to take my word for it)
It was my first time visiting this office a couple days ago, but from the moment I walked through the door, I was greeted so kindly and sincerely that I felt as if I had been a patient with them for years and years. Admittedly, I hadn't been to a dentist's office for quite a while before this visit, but instead of giving me the lecture that I expected (and rightly deserved), Dr. Pezeshkian chose to focus on the positives and gave me a thorough, straightforward exam while also making me laugh.
